Eddie Overseas (under construction)
I was offered a contract for 26 weeks at the Sports Stadium Brighton Sussex in Tom Arnold’s Ice Circus 1954.So I sailed in the “Stratheden” from Sydney and disembarked at Colombo. In Calcutta I worked at “Firpo’s” Restaurant for 6 weeks. Then I flew to Switzerland and from Zermatt intended to climb the Matterhorn. However that year big snows made for avalanche danger and settled for a rock climb of 19hrs. on the Unter Garblehorn. In London I picked up my baggage that I had forwarded from Colombo..At the Brighton Sport's Stadium I rigged my trapeze from the ceiling had a practice and then did the band call. I fitted into the show well and only did one spot of 6minutes. One of the chorus girls assisted me handing me the props. My driving force was to get more difficult tricks into the act so practice and more practice. One night after the show not waiting for the audience to leave nor for the house lights to be turned back on I did a back summersault from the trapeze to the ice [this was the last trick in the act]. Without a sight line I overturned and landed onto the back of my head. Waking up in hospital much later. The Drs. gave me a 6 weeks stay in hospital followed by 3mths to recoup. I declined their offer and was back in the show 2 weeks later in time for the B.B.C T.V. |
